The University was established in 2002 in Gilgit, situated in the mountainous areas of Pakistan. Its training and education focus is primarily on mountain environment and resource development with contextual relevance and field-based experience. The main campus is situated against a dramatic backdrop of steep mountains at the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers. KIU has sub-campuses in Hunza, Diamer, and Khizer increasing diversity around the province.
At present, the university has three faculties: Faculty of Life Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences & Engineering, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Under these faculties, various undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degree programs are offered.
KIU is committed to providing local and indigenous related studies such as Gem-stones cutting, Jewelry designing, Wood-cutting, Wood-crafting, and Mining techniques.
KIU is also offering courses that are the need and demand of modern times including Forestry, Pasture-management, Grassland- management, Mining-engineering, and Geological engineering.
